Fairbreak Global and Cricket Development Program target Making Cricket Accessible for All

We are thrilled to announce a new partnership between Fairbreak Global and the Cricket Development Program (CDP), a simple mission to make cricket accessible and affordable for everyone. This collaboration aims to break down barriers and provide educational resources and opportunities to parents, teachers and volunteers world-wide.

Inclusivity:
Fairbreak Global, dedicated to promoting gender equality and inclusivity in cricket, has teamed up with the CDP, founded by ex-professional cricketer Charlie Hartley, who focuses on providing valuable educational resources to the world for FREE. Together, they are set to make significant strides toward a more inclusive and accessible cricketing community.

Education:
As part of this partnership, the CDP will provide essential educational resources to multiple countries, ensuring that aspiring cricketers have the knowledge and tools they need to succeed. By offering value-based education, the CDP aims to inspire a love for cricket and create opportunities for everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Key Initiatives:

1. Global Educational Outreach: The CDP will distribute educational materials and resources to various countries, focusing on communities where access to cricket education is limited. These efforts will help cultivate a deeper understanding of the game and its values.

2. Affordable Cricket Opportunities: Fairbreak Global and the CDP are committed to making cricket more affordable. Through this partnership, they will work on initiatives that reduce financial barriers, allowing more people to participate in the sport.

3. Promoting a Love for Cricket: By combining Fairbreak Global’s expertise in promoting gender equality with the CDP’s focus on education, the partnership aims to inspire a passion for cricket in the hearts of young athletes worldwide.

Charlie Hartley, CDP CEO “From our first conversation, I knew that a partnership with Cheryll and Fairbreak would make a lot of sense. We both share a passion for equality and creating positive change.”

Cheryll Rogers, Fairbreak CEO added, “We are very impressed with the Cricket Development Program; it’s so clear and easy to follow. Giving anyone the means to bring technical cricket skills without overwhelming instructions is a brilliant skill in itself, and the programme will positively enhance any young person joining the sport. The impact the programme will have globally cannot be understated. Our partnership is intended to expand its scope to the lower socioeconomic regions as well as support access to educational institutions in all countries. From Vanuatu to the World Stage: Selina Solman’s Journey

From Vanuatu to the World Stage Selina Solman's Journey

From Vanuatu to the World Stage: Selina Solman’s Journey

As captain of the Vanuatu national women’s cricket team, Selina Solman’s journey is a testament to Fairbreak’s transformative power. Selina shares her cricketing story so far, her defining experiences with Fairbreak, and the lasting impact this global movement has had on her life, both on and off the field.

How did your cricket journey begin?

It all started with a challenge from my cousin back in 2013. I was 17, and Vanuatu only had three clubs in the whole country at the time, and they were looking for more girls to join. I’d never even seen a real cricket ball before! So I told my cousin if you want me to come and try cricket, you have to play for my netball team. We made a deal: I went to cricket, and I never left.

There are many reasons I fell in love with cricket. One reason is that I love a challenge, and I wanted to stay to see if I could get up to the same standard as the other girls. I also felt that more than any other sport, I’d walk away from each training session learning something new. I’ve been playing cricket for 12 years now, and every training session I go to, I still always walk away learning something new.

How did you get involved with Fairbreak?

Shaun invited me to a three-day training camp in New Zealand in 2015. That’s how I met everyone at Fairbreak, and Shaun himself. He’s been a massive part of my life in cricket and as a person and has helped me grow so much. Then, in 2018, whilst living in Adelaide, I returned from training, and the family I was staying with told me I had a phone call. It was Shaun. He said they were having their first Fairbreak games in Wormsley, England, and asked if I wanted to be part of it. I was so happy and very emotional. I’d been away from my family for a long time, and this felt like everything I’d been working for was finally happening. I love playing cricket, and I love to travel, so going to England, a place I’d always wanted to visit, was a big bonus. I had tears streaming down my face, happy tears, of course. I was incredibly proud and emotional.

What role has Fairbreak played in your career?

My whole career is built around Fairbreak. It’s how I got to where I am today. A few years ago, I faced a difficult decision; I needed to support myself and I had to tell the people who believed in me that I might have to give up on cricket. Shaun wouldn’t let me give up; he encouraged me to keep going. I didn’t stop, and Fairbreak continued to help me build my confidence and grow, especially when it came to captaincy. I knew nothing about leading a team before Fairbreak. But being involved in their tournaments – the UK one, Canberra, Sydney, Dubai – I’ve grown so much. I’ve met so many amazing people through Fairbreak. I’ve gotten to play with some of the best cricketers and coaches in the world and made lifelong friends. My career is built on Fairbreak. It’s made me who I am today.

What does being a Fairbreaker mean to you?

Being a Fairbreaker means being proud. It’s about women’s empowerment. It’s about equality. I’m a very proud Fairbreaker, and I tell everyone about it. If someone asks me what team I play for, I tell them about Fairbreak.

Coming from an associate country, there are so many talented people around me, but we never get the opportunities. We can only watch all these amazing players. But because of Fairbreak, I’ve been able to play in these tournaments. Where else can you do that? To me, Fairbreak is all about that – playing for people who never thought they’d be in that position, making their dreams come true. Fairbreak means everything to me. I’m incredibly proud to be a Fairbreaker, and I’ll never take it for granted. The name Fairbreak itself says it all. I couldn’t be a prouder Fairbreaker.

What impact has Fairbreak had on your life?

Fairbreak helped me with my career and made me believe I could achieve more. I always wanted to play cricket but was worried about getting paid. You don’t get paid to play cricket in my country. Fairbreak was the first time I’ve ever been paid to play cricket, and it’s helped me a lot with my personal life and my family’s lives.

I could finally help my family in ways I never thought possible. We could even pay off a big chunk of my mum’s house. It’s given me a sense of independence too. I was able to move out and live in my own apartment, which doesn’t happen often for young girls living on the island. It’s also allowed me to give back to my cricket community. I’ve been able to help get uniforms for my team, and transport to the club every weekend.

Since returning from Fairbreak tournaments, there’s been a real change here. People are getting more involved in cricket, especially women’s cricket. It’s amazing to hear words of encouragement and praise from the same community that once discouraged me. Now, I have my family and community with me; people see the good in cricket and its future.

Fairbreak is part of my life. Shaun is someone who I will always hold dearly in my heart for believing in me, and I am very grateful for everyone who works behind the scenes.

Creating more work opportunities for women in cricket with Cricket Jobs

Creating more job opportunities for women in cricket with Cricket Jobs

Creating more work opportunities for women in cricket with Cricket Jobs

Fairbreak is thrilled to announce our partnership with Cricket Jobs, a global job platform that helps cricket enthusiasts worldwide find their dream jobs in the sport.

After searching for work within cricket, professional cricketer Jared Wilson realised there was no central place to oversee the current opportunities available and no clear line of communication between players, coaches, or office roles. Thus, Cricket Jobs was born to provide that place and break down the barriers to entry with a free-to-register, easily accessible job platform. One of our primary goals at Fairbreak is to create more opportunities for women in cricket; a substantial component of reaching this goal is providing visibility on roles and transparency in the job search. Cricket Jobs can provide that service to our community and beyond.

Cricket Jobs is all about promoting jobs within the cricket industry, and I want it to be equal for both men and women. I am excited to reach the current participants across the globe who have absolute passion for the game and potentially have a desire to work within the game. Everyone knows that outside of the top 10 test-playing nations in cricket, players play international cricket alongside a full-time job. I think this is admirable, and we would like to offer more assistance in providing a path for more female players to work within cricket.

The potential impact of our partnership is significant. It could lead to a more balanced representation of genders in coaching and executive roles across the globe. While we haven’t conducted a case study to determine the current gender distribution in these roles, we are optimistic that this partnership could play a pivotal role in achieving a 50/50 split for both male and female employees in the cricketing industry. Additionally, we aim to leverage this partnership to promote the Gold Standard tournaments, increase viewership, and amplify the message of gender equality in cricket.

Our key mission is to allow more people to see what roles are out there. We are looking to play a part in growing the game by making sure more people view the vacancies, which should ensure the highest of calibre of employees applying for these roles, getting accepted, and then driving the game forward. This is not to say everyone has not been doing a great job already, but more so bringing the roles around the world together and helping organisations promote these roles to more people. Cricket is growing day by day, and it’s mainly due to the people behind the scenes. Ground staff work countless hours, coaches throw ball after ball at batters, and management works hard to ensure everything runs smoothly so the players can perform at their best.

Our role in this partnership is to provide support in promoting the jobs on the platform, collecting data to help teams streamline their recruitment process, and driving the game of cricket forward. With our partnership with Fairbreak, we are committed to playing a significant role in promoting women players, coaches, and staff members and ensuring balanced gender representation in the workplace.” – Jared Wilson, Founder & Director of Cricket Jobs

Our mission at Fairbreak is to progress equality on a truly global scale, using cricket as our vehicle. We believe our partnership with Cricket Jobs places us one step closer to realising that vision.

FairBreak’s Commentary regarding the ICEC Report into Discrimination

“FairBreak Global is not surprised by the grim findings and scathing conclusions of the Equity in Cricket report, Holding up a Mirror to Cricket, published by the ICEC earlier this week. No longer can there be a systemic and collective failure to make the game of cricket accessible to everyone. A culture of discrimination based on an individual’s upbringing, gender or race is unacceptable and cannot persist.

“FairBreak’s reason for being stems from a commitment made, 20 years ago, to combat the marginalisation of women in cricket and to improve their opportunities and pathways to success. Today, the organisation prides itself on running the only global T20 cricket tournament featuring female players from more than 35 nations.

“Advancing equity, diversity and inclusion has always been the FairBreak mission and how it is achieved exemplifies how things can be done. Talented players are not overlooked due to their race or geographical location. FairBreak’s management, umpiring, coaching, commentating and media teams feature and celebrate an internationally diverse talent pool of women who contribute progressive attitudes and cultural wisdom to the organisation’s ethos.

“We work extremely hard, every day, to strive for fairness and equity in all that we do,” says FairBreak’s founder, Shaun Martyn. “The game of cricket is enjoyed by millions and reaches into communities all over the planet. We are optimistic that the ICEC report will accelerate the transformative change the sport needs to see”.
